The Perfect Microwave-Safe Bowls I Didn’t Think Existed
If anyone is ever in doubt for what to get me as a gift, the answer is and will always be: bowls. Big, small, salad, snack — I don’t discriminate. When my husband goes on trips, I ask for a small souvenir bowl. (Preferably one that doesn’t say “Made in China” on the back.)
Obviously, different bowls have different uses. I don’t need to melt butter in a decorative bowl. But when it comes to mixing bowls, I want something durable enough to be put in the dishwasher and ideally, the microwave. Metal bowls make great mixing bowls but I’m not about to blow up my house. Glass bowls are nice but they’re heavy and breakable. Melamine checks the dishwasher box but not the microwave one.
Enter Bamboozle. This company uses a proprietary material called Astrik, “a biodegradable thermoplastic derived from renewable resources such as corn starch or sugarcane,” which remains completely unharmed by microwave voodoo. (Aka however the f*ck microwaves heat food, I don’t know and I don’t have enough time to look it up.) It also breaks down quicker than plastic, which is better for the environment. You’re such a good person!
The company first went viral for its New York-cool compost bin. Not being a compost family, the bin went right over my head and I reached for the bowls. There are three color families: Alpine Forest, Desert Bloom, and Fresh Guacamole. Each set comes with five bowls and retails for $60, which makes each bowl $12. That’s not bad for bowls! Especially ones as versatile as these.
I went with an Alpine Forest baking bundle, which means I also got measuring cups and spoons. What I love about the cups is that there’s a line indicating the halfway point in each cup, which means I’m cutting down on dishes by using the cups for multiple measurements.
Bamboozle also makes stretchy covers for the bowls (see above). These are game-changers because Saran wrap doesn’t stick to the Astrik material. I’m assuming it’s rejecting the plastic material because of its environmental impact. You can buy the covers separately or together in a bundle with bowls.
All the sets are available on the brand’s website, but check Amazon before you buy because they’re often on sale there:
