Buru Car Coat: The Ultimate Spring Jacket
My (very small) closet is overflowing with outerwear. I have an endless supply of sweatshirts, sweaters, and jackets. Yet every time I go to get dressed for a semi-formal occasion, I’m stumped. I don’t want to wear a sweatshirt to a nice family dinner. Easter is too cold for a light sweater. No matter how much a dress up a leather jacket, it still looks too ~ edgy ~ for a child’s birthday party. (Weird example, but whatever.)
I’ve been on the hunt for that ideal in-between jacket. Something that’s not a full-length coat, destined to be worn then immediately hung up once I get to my destination. A statement piece that’s also just functionally warm.
Guys, I found it.
Maybe everyone in Los Angeles already knows about this unicorn-esque item, but simple Pacific Northwesterner that I am, I’ve only recently stumbled upon Buru’s signature item: the Cropped Car Coat. This is THE ideal outerwear piece for the transition from winter to spring. Think The Amazon Coat (aka that Orolay jacket that went nuts in 2018), but upscale.
The woman-owned, LA-based brand makes this timeless piece in a rotating series of fabrics. The retro-looking coat is cropped at a flattering waist-level and looks just as good with jeans and sneakers as it does with matching skirt — yes, Buru has matching mini skirts — and heels. Toss it on for a date night, Sunday dinner with the in-laws, a PTA meeting, whatever. (I say this as if I’ve been to a single PTA meeting. I don’t actually know what people wear to those.)
I’m not a fancy lady, but the Cropped Car Coat makes me feel fancy. With zero effort, I am suddenly Kim Novak. I am Doris Day. I am probably not Lucy, but I might be Ethel.
Something I love about this jacket is how forgiving it is to move around. Again, leather jackets are great. Love ‘em. But they’re not exactly cozy. The Cropped Cart Coat? She’s flexible.
The version I’m currently obsessed with is The Aprés Car Coat, which is made of a lightweight puffer material. As someone who is constantly cold, I need this insulation well into May. However, the pink quilted number is giving Jackie O and while I have exactly zero pieces of pink clothing, I might need it?!
Buru also has a longer version of this: the Car Coat, which comes in five patterns, as well. It’s just as cute but as per the course with longer jackets, simply not as casual as a cropped piece.
Here are the versions currently on the site, but don’t come for me if they swap them out soon:
